How does the water cooling system of a WWI machine gun work?

it would come in a metal jacket that you could fit over the barrel.you would pour water in a open spot at the top. when the barrel got hot the water immediately cooled it. the water would eventually get too hot and you would have to change it by pulling a plug on the bottom and letting the water run out
