First braces consultation?

What does a first braces consultation involve? I've never had them before and I'm wondering what to expect. Also, is this the right time to ask about the cost? It seems like I should make sure that everything will work financially before I make another appointment. Will the next appointment be braces? (any help or advice is appreciated).
